Uncertain. By surface analysis, ficu (fig) +‎ pala (shovel). Perhaps borrowed from Spanish higo de pala. Compare ― just for the phonetic similarities ― Spanish nopal, which is from Classical Nahuatl, and Arabic بَلَس (balas), a borrowing from, probably, an Old South Arabian stratum.
