dichteg

Luxembourgish

Alternative forms

  • diichteg (dialectal)

Etymology

From Middle High German düchtich, West Central German form of tüchtec, from Old High German *duhtig, *tuhtig, from Proto-West Germanic *duhtīg. Cognate with German tüchtig, Dutch duchtig, English doughty. By surface analysis, Duucht +‎ -eg.

The short vowel has parallels in richteg, wichteg, but these are suspect of being German borrowings. If so, German influence will also be the reason for the re-shortened vowel in dichteg. Otherwise there might be a regular development before -eg at play.
