From Proto-Somaloid *ʕaws- (grass), from Proto-East Cushitic *ʕawš, derived from Proto-Cushitic *ʕaw- (grass, foliage). Compare also cawl.

Cognate with Garre aas, Tunni ees, Rendille h'os, Jiiddu is, Daasanach iish, Saho cashsho, Afar qayso, Sidamo hayisso, Tsamai ʕaš (corn) and possibly Oromo ees (oat).
