From Old Spanish calabaça, derived from Paleo-Hispanic *calapacceu (compare Catalan carabassa). Less likely from Arabic قَرْعَة يَابِسَة (qarʕa yābisa, dry gourd), which is from Classical Persian خَرْبُزَه (xarbuza, melon).[1]
