Usage notes

By a quirk of the history of chemistry, the term asparaginic acid has rarely or never been used to denote asparagine (Asn), even though the normal practices of chemical nomenclature would encourage that denotation for it. Instead, it has (uncommonly and formerly) been used as a synonym of aspartic acid (Asp), the close chemical cousin of asparagine. This fact has indirectly resulted in the term asparaginate having two senses, which see. (Other examples exist of such quirks in older chemical nomenclature due to historical accident; they are not rare.)
