Etymology

Borrowed from Spanish anófeles / anofeles, from New Latin Anopheles (genus of mosquitoes), coined by the German entomologist Johann Wilhelm Meigen (1764–1845), from Ancient Greek ἀνωφελής (anōphelḗs, unprofitable, useless; hurtful, prejudicial).
