Borrowed from Ancient Greek *Ἰᾱ́ϝων (*Iā́wōn), whence Ἴων (Íōn) + -𒀀𒀀 (-a.a /-āya/, gentilic suffix). Compare with Neo-Assyrian 𒆳𒅀𒎙𒀀𒀀 (KURia-man-a.a /Yamanāya/), from the same source.
