Etymology
18th century, learned borrowing from Latin vocabularium. By surface analysis, Vokabel + -ar.

Noun
Vokabular n (strong, genitive Vokabulars, plural Vokabulare)
- vocabulary (stock of words)
- Synonym: Wortschatz
- vocabulary (list of words, typically with concise glosses)
- Synonyms: Wortverzeichnis / Wörterverzeichnis, Wortliste / Wörterliste
Usage notes
- (stock of words): Wortschatz and Vokabular are generally interchangeable. However, there is a loose tendency to prefer Wortschatz when referring to all the words in a language or a person’s knowledge, and to prefer Vokabular when referring to a more or less random selection of words (as those used in a text, those to be memorized for a course, etc.).
