Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *lay, *rleʔ ~ rlyeʔ (Coblin, 1986)

This root is composed of two basic phonetic components, a liquid initial and a *-Vj rhyme. Their manifestations across Sino-Tibetan reflexes are highly unstable.

Tibetan rje is from earlier *r-lj-,[1] which may explain some of the chaos with regards to the liquid initial.

This root has a large variety of prefixes attested.

Verb

*laj

  1. to change
  2. to exchange: buy, sell
