Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan:
    • Proto-Tibeto-Burman: *g-ya (Benedict, 1972; Matisoff, 2003; STEDT)

For comparisons, see Schuessler (2007:559), STEDT and Zhang, Jacques & Lai (2019:84).

A velar pre-initial is common to Jingpho and Tibetan but rGyalrongic (which has an *rV- preinitial instead) and others show no trace of it.

The presence of velar codas in Chinese and Situ is unexplained.

Verb

*ja

  1. to itch
