Proto-Norse

Etymology

Unknown etymology. Potentially Germanic and related to carve, in relation to the ship's construction. Another uncertain possibility is a relation from Proto-Slavic *korabľь (which also could derive in reverse from Norse), then potentially from *čerti (to cut, to separate, to peel), to a root with the meaning of separation (of planks), akin to the root of Old Norse skeið (sheeth → ship type).

Another speculative posibility relates it to Latin carabus, from Ancient Greek κάραβος (kárabos, small boat); compare caravel. When compared to cognate Finnish karvas, assumed to stem from a Proto-Finnic *karbas, an earlier Proto-Norse-Germanic form could have been something akin to *karᵃβas.
