Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-Iranian/ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH
Proto-Indo-Iranian
Etymology
Traditionally, from earlier *diȷ́ʰwáH with assimilation, from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s ~ *dn̥ǵʰuh₂és (“tongue”), compare the *diȷ́ʰ- forms in Nuristani. A parallel shift from *diȷ́ʰ- to *ȷ́iȷ́ʰ- is found in Sanskrit जिह्म (jihmá, “oblique”), from Proto-Indo-European *dh₃ǵʰ-mó-s. Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰi-ǵʰuH-eh₂, a reduplicated noun from *ǵʰewH- (“to invoke”), whence also *ȷ́ʰuHáyati (“to call, summon”).[1]
