From Proto-Indo-European *méh₂-meh₂-, reduplication of a base *méh₂- (“mama, mother”). Cognate with Latin mamma (“mother, mama, nurse”), Lithuanian mãma, momà (“mother”), Latvian mãma (“mother”), Old Irish muimme (“foster mother”), Irish mam (“mother”).
