Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Samic *vāljē (whence Southern Sami vaeljie (glade)), from the same root as *välkedä (bright, spacious, sparse), *väledä, *välkküdäk, ultimately related to *valkëda (white), *valo (light).[1]
