Etymology

The instructive plural of *pää; *päi- +‎ *-n. The semantic development is with a ... head ~ headfirst, headlongfacing, in the direction of, toward(s); the original senses are also found in descendants, but are more transparently analyzable as instructive forms of *pää (head).

Usage notes
