Etymology
The instructive plural of *pää; *päi- + *-n. The semantic development is “with a ... head” ~ “headfirst, headlong” → “facing, in the direction of, toward(s)”; the original senses are also found in descendants, but are more transparently analyzable as instructive forms of *pää (“head”).

Usage notes
Allows a variety of cases, including the partitive to express movement towards someone or something, but also the locative cases (inessive, illative, elative, adessive, allative, ablative); use in descendants varies.
