Old Novgorodian

Etymology

With the change x < ś < s, from typical Eastern Old Novgorodian свѣте (světe), inherited from Proto-Slavic *světъ.

Reconstructed based on the Pskov dialectal Russian хвет (xvet, light)[1], originating from Old Pskovian, where one of the dialectal features was s–sh and z–zh merger ‒ “shokanye” («шоканье») or lisping[2], which sometimes led to changes in the soft [sʲ] > [x].[1]
