Old Novgorodian

Etymology

Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěďь (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěďь). By surface analysis, *кѣдити (*kěditi) +‎ (-i, < *-jь).

Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian кеж (kež, rye jelly, oatmeal pottage)[1][2], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[3] Compare with Old East Slavic цѣжь (cěžĭ), Russian цеж (cež).

Pronunciation

  • Hyphenation: *кѣ‧жь

Noun

*кѣжь • (*kěžĭm

  1. rye jelly, oatmeal pottage

Descendants

  • Russian: кеж (kež), кеш (keš) (dialectal)
