Old Novgorodian

Etymology

Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěvьje (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěvьje). By surface analysis, *кѣвь (*kěvĭ) +‎ -ьѥ (-ĭje).

Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian кевьё (kevʹjó, holder, long flail stick)[1], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[2] Compare with Old East Slavic цѣвьѥ (cěvĭje), Russian цевьё (cevʹjó).
