Old Novgorodian

Etymology

Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cěvьca (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kěvьca). By surface analysis, *кѣвь (*kěvĭ) +‎ -ьца (-ĭcʹa).

Reconstructed based on the dialectal Russian ке́вца́ (kévcá), кивца (kivca, spool, bobbin, weaving coil)[1] and also кеве́ц m (kevéc, spool, flail beater), ки́вец m (kívec, weaving bobbin, reel)[2], originating from Old Novgorodian and Old Pskovian, where the most important feature was the absence of the second palatalization of the velar *k, *g, *x in the position before and *i, which were only softened to [kʲ], [ɡʲ], [xʲ].[3] The origin is also indicated by the presence of a typical Novgorodian change ѣ > и in Russian кивца (kivca), ки́вец (kívec).[4]
