Neopalpa donaldtrumpi
Translingual
Etymology
From Neopalpa + donaldtrumpi, from being a species of Neopalpa moth named in honor of Donald Trump (45th president of the United States), for visual similarity of the head coloration of the moth and the hair of Donald Trump.
Proper noun
- A taxonomic species within the family Gelechiidae – a kind of twirler moth with yellowish-white scales present on the head in adults.
- 2017 January 17, Becky Ferreira, “This Moth With a Golden Head and Small Genitals Was Named After Trump”, in Motherboard[1] (in English), archived from the original on 18 January 2017:
- Nazari settled on the name N. donaldtrumpi because the silky yellow-white scales these moths develop on their heads in adulthood reminded him of the President-elect’s signature hairdo.
- 2017 January 17, Hudson Hongo, “Moth With Scaly Head and Weird Dick Named in Honor of Donald Trump”, in Gizmodo[2] (in English), archived from the original on 10 December 2024:
- As the genitalia of moths and butterflies are extremely diverse, they hold an outsized importance to taxonomists, often serving as the only means of differentiating similar species. In this case, the creature’s unique head scales are far more prominent, but that doesn’t mean N. donaldtrumpi’s weird dick isn’t also worthy of study.
- 2017 January 18, Dan Satherley, “Mop-haired moth with tiny penis named after Donald Trump”, in Stuff[3] (in English), archived from the original on 4 September 2025:
- The Neopalpa donaldtrumpi has a very recognisable hairstyle, which scientists likened to the billionaire's famous mop.
- 2017 January 18, AJ Willingham, “New moth named in honor of Donald Trump”, in CNN[4] (in English):
- A biologist has named a newly discovered species of moth after our next president. The Neopalpa donaldtrumpi is a wee little creature found in parts of California and Baja, Mexico. […] It seems nature favors fancy golden hairdos as much as the man himself (who could forget China’s beloved Trump bird?), because the N. donaldtrumpi sports a very familiar-looking crown of yellowish scales.
- 2017 January 19, Benjamin Butterworth, “Scientists name moth with golden hair and a tiny penis after Trump”, in PinkNews[5] (in English), archived from the original on 14 November 2024:
- Its body is white and the wings are generally brown or greyish. One of its most identifiable features, though, is its very small genitalia. Evolutionary biologist Vazrick Nazari said the creature’s genitals are “comparatively smaller” than that of the Neopalpa neonata, its close relative. Naturally Mr Nazari sought to name it after the president elect. It’s to now be known as Neopalpa donaldtrumpi. Or just “donaldtrumpi” for short. And if you want to find a donaldtrumpi, well it lives in Mexico, or you can find some in California. Let’s hope that wall doesn’t keep all the donaldtrumpi out.
