Etymology
Borrowed from Hunsrik, representing a rarer spelling of Hunsrick. This word principally refers to the Hunsrück mountains in southwestern Germany (where the largest group of German settlers came from). However, it is also used of the language, e.g. Hunsrick spreche (“to speak Hunsrik”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈhuns.rik/, /ˈhʊns.rɪk/, (spelling pronunciation) /ˈhʌns-/, /ˈhʌnz-/
Audio (US): (file) - Hyphenation: Huns‧rik
Proper noun
Hunsrik
- A West Central German language or dialect, influenced by other German varieties as well as Portuguese, spoken by over 1 million people in (mainly southern) Brazil.
Usage notes
- The dialects of the Hunsrück form a transitional zone between Central and Rhine Franconian. In the Brazilian variety, i.e. Hunsrik, the Rhine Franconian features clearly prevail. Nevertheless, Wiktionary currently treats Central Franconian as its direct ancestor.
