From hetero- (different, from Ancient Greek ἕτερος (héteros)) +‎ Ancient Greek γόμφος (gómphos, bolt, nail, dowel). Coined alongside Trichogomphus.

Coined by German Argentine zoologist, entomologist, herpetologist, and botanist Hermann Burmeister in 1847.
