From hetero- (“different”, from Ancient Greek ἕτερος (héteros)) + Ancient Greek γόμφος (gómphos, “bolt, nail, dowel”). Coined alongside Trichogomphus.
Coined by German Argentine zoologist, entomologist, herpetologist, and botanist Hermann Burmeister in 1847.
