Etymology
From Middle High German herde, from Old High German *herdī, West Central German form of hertī, from Proto-West Germanic *hardī. Cognate with German Härte. The -t- in the plural after the suffix -t (as in Héicht). Compare similarly breet (“broad”) > breeden, but Breet (“breadth”) > Breeten.
