Gebéŋ
Pumpokol
Alternative forms
- Gebèng (M.)
- Gebeŋ (W.)
Etymology
Composed of *ge (“big”) + béŋ (“land”), literally, “[people of the] high-riverbank”.[1]
Compare the Ostyak Yug ethnonym Chaibaŋ (“Yugh from the Dub-čes river region”), with identical compounding. Yugh and Pumpokol peoples were in close proximity and intermingled quite frequently, hence the amount of false glossings of Yugh terms for Pumpokol.
Proper noun
Gebéŋ (W.)
- Pumpokol people, a former Yeniseian people that went extinct in the 18th century
Derived terms
- Gebéŋ-aj (“Pumpokol language”)
