Cantorbéry
See also: Cantórbery
French
Alternative forms
- Cantorbie, Contorberi, Contorbery (all obsolete)
Etymology
Inherited from Middle French Cantorbie, Cantorbiere, from Old French Cantorbire, Cantorbiri, form Middle English Caunterbury or its (etymon) Old English Cantwarbyriġ, late form of Cantwara byriġ, dative and genitive of Cantwara burg.
Form development
The modern French form in -béry, replacing the usual Old French -bire, -biri and Middle French -bie, -biere, is probably an adjustment to pronunciations of modern English -bury with /ɛ/. On the other hand, the -o- in obsolete forms such as Contorberi is possibly either of dialectal origin or an adjustment of the /au̯/ of English Caunterbury to (Old or Middle) French phonotactics, though compare e.g. Early Modern English Conterbery.
