Canis dirus
Translingual
Etymology
Latin canis (“dog”) + dirus (“dreadful; dire”)
Proper noun
- (obsolete) A taxonomic species within the family Canidae – synonym of †Aenocyon dirus, the dire wolf.
Usage notes
- In taxonomy, this name is considered invalid due to genetic testing, which revealed that dire wolves were not part of the genus Canis (true wolves, dogs, coyotes, jackels, etc). It is still used outside of scientific literature, however.
Descendants
- → English: dire wolf (calque)
