Bardzila

Lithuanian

Etymology

(Baltic origin:) Derived from Lithuanian Bardys (beard) +‎ zila (diminutive suffix).

Compare Belarusian Бардзіла (Bardzila) and Polish Bordziło.[1][2]

(Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars who study Baltic onomastics claimed that the name Bardzila and its Slavic cognates are of Gothic origin and that they are composed of bards (giant) +‎ -ila (diminutive suffix) (cognated to Old High German Bardilo). Although debunked, this perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.
