1. Used to form adverbs from nouns.

   Teil (“part”) → teilweise (“partly, in part”)

   Gruppe (“group”) → gruppenweise (“in groups”)

   Kreuz (“cross”) → kreuzweise (“in a cross”)

2. Used to form adverbs from adjectives or participles together with the interfix -er-.

• Words formed with -weise are sometimes used as adjectives (e.g. schrittweise in "der schrittweise Anstieg" and "ein schrittweiser Anstieg"). Such usage however is disputed.
