-ući

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *-ǫťьjь. In Proto-Slavic this was the ending of the present active participle, which was part of the inflectional system and could be formed for any imperfective verb (as is still the case in e.g. Russian, where the corresponding ending is -ущий (-uščij)/-ющий (-juščij)), but in Serbo-Croatian this participle fell into disuse and survives only in certain lexicalized adjectives.

1. suffix forming a verbal adjective from the present tense of certain imperfective verbs, specifically those whose third person plural present tense ends in -u, i.e. infinitives in -ati, -nuti, -sti, -ći and a few others

   ‎hódati (“to walk”) → ‎hȏdajū (“they walk”) + ‎-ūćī → ‎hódajūćī (“walking”)

   ‎iznenađívati (“to surprise”) → ‎iznenàđujū (“they surprise”) + ‎-ūćī → ‎iznenàđujūći (“surprising”)

   ‎ìći (“to go”) → ‎ȉdū (“they go”) + ‎-ūćī → ‎ìdūćī (“next, following”)

   ‎tȅći (“to flow; to progress”) → ‎tèkū (“they flow, they progress”) + ‎-ūćī → ‎tèkūćī (“liquid; flowing; current”)
