Inherited from Ancient Greek -ῐς (-ĭs, feminine suffix), to be more congruous with other inflections of the suffix, e.g. -ῐδες (-ĭdes, plural).

Many words which utilize this suffix in modern Greek are inheritances from older forms of Greek, though not exclusively.
