๐Œ…๐Œ๐Œž

Oscan

Etymology

From Proto-Italic *wijฤ, from Proto-Indo-European *wihโ‚ehโ‚‚-,[1] from *weyhโ‚- (โ€œto pursue, be strongโ€).

According to Buck,[2] in Oscan the Proto-Italic first-declension nominative singular ending *-ฤ changes in quality to a sound similar to [ษ”ห], which was written as รบ โŸจ๐ŒžโŸฉ (representing [o]) or, more rarely, u โŸจ๐Œ–โŸฉ.

Cognate with Lithuanian vyti (โ€œto pursueโ€). See also vฤซs, invฤซtus, invฤซtล, Ancient Greek ฮฟแผถฮผฮฟฯ‚ (oรฎmos).
