Etymology

In its single-suffix form, first attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 셰〯다〮 (Yale: syěytá).

In its fused double-suffix form, first attested in the Sinjeung yuhap (新增類合 / 신증유합), 1576, as Middle Korean 셰우다 (Yale: syeyGwuta).

Equivalent to 서- (seo-, to stand) + -이우- (-iu-, fused causative suffix) + -다 (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
