Etymology
Nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 귀향 (歸鄕, gwihyang, “return to the countryside”). Originally referred to a specific form of exile in which a disgraced minister was stripped of his office and sent back to his hometown, but expanded to mean all forms of exile as punishment in dynastic East Asia.
