Usage notes

In Japanese grammar, (けい)(よう)() (keiyōshi) refers to a specific class of (よう)(げん) (yōgen, inflectable words), with a specific inflection. Historically, they include words whose (しゅう)()(けい) (shūshikei, final form) ends with (shi) and whose (れん)(たい)(けい) (rentaikei, attributive form) ends with (ki). In standard modern Japanese, both forms now end with (i) (hence the alternate name "i-adjective"). Other endings occur in some dialects. (けい)(よう)() (keiyōshi) contrast with other classes of words with adjectival functions, such as (けい)(よう)(どう)() (keiyō dōshi, na-adjectives, literally adjectival verbs), (れん)(たい)() (rentaishi, adnominals), and attributive nouns with the particle (no).
