Etymology
From Confucius's remarks to his disciples as quoted in Shiji
- 孔子聞之,曰:「吾以言取人,失之宰予;以貌取人,失之子羽。」 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

- Kǒngzǐ wén zhī, yuē: “Wú yǐ yán qǔ rén, shī zhī Zǎi Yǔ; yǐ mào qǔ rén, shī zhī Zǐyǔ.” [Pinyin]
- Upon hearing this, Confucius said, “I judged people by their speech and was mistaken in the case of Zai Yu; I judged people by their appearance and was mistaken in the case of Ziyu [courtesy name of Tantai Mieming].”
