Etymology
From Old Japanese. Originally named 下捄 (Shimofusa, literally “lower Fusa”), after the ancient province of 捄国 (Fusa no kuni, literally “province of Fusa”) was split into two provinces around the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Historically sometimes spelled しもつふさ (Shimotsufusa) with genitive particle つ (tsu), compare 上捄 (Kamitsufusa).
The kanji spelling 下総 is first attested in AD 704.
