Etymology
From Old Japanese. Originally named 上捄 (Kamitsufusa, literally “upper Fusa”), after the ancient province of 捄国 (Fusa no kuni, literally “province of Fusa”) was split into two provinces around the 6th and 7th centuries AD. The pronunciation later shifted to かずさ (Kazusa, historical kana かづさ (Kadusa)).
The kanji spelling 上総 is first attested in AD 704.
