ὗλις

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • ῡ̔́λῐς (hū́lĭs)

Etymology

Unknown. Frisk suggests that this word might have arisen from ῑ̓λῡ́ς (īlū́s, mud, slime), by way of contamination with ῡ̔λῐ́ζω (hūlĭ́zō, to filter, strain). However, Beekes does not find this convincing.
