Etymology

From ἑπτά (heptá, seven), but the medial voicing is unexplained, perhaps by influence from the following nasal. See ὄγδοος (ógdoos), which also shows medial voicing, and Old Church Slavonic седмъ (sedmŭ) (< *sebdmъ < *septmъ), with the same voicing.
