አበሻ

Amharic

Etymology

Borrowed from Ge'ez ሐበሠ (ḥäbäśä, literally Habesha), through metathesis of the initial consonant cluster (ḥ- > ʔ-) and vowel shift (e > ä). The term reflects the historical and cultural continuity between Geʽez and Amharic ethnonyms.
