Traditionally analyzed as ပဲ (pai:, “bean”) + နောက် (nauk, “murky”), though the latter component has been considered to be from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *(s-)nok (“bean”), and compared to Old Chinese 菽 (OC *hljɯwɢ, “legumes”).
