Etymology
From Arabic طُبَّاق (ṭubbāq), though by different derivation than Tibetan ཐ་མག (tha mag, “cigarette”). Compare Old Marathi 𑘝𑘦𑘰𑘏𑘳 (tamākhu), Gujarati તમાકુ (tamāku), Kannada ತಂಬಾಕು (tambāku), Punjabi ਤਮਾਕੂ (tamākū), Maithili तमाकुल (tamākul) and Odia ତମାଖୁ (tamākhu).
