Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *jaɰᴬ⁴ (fiber; filament). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨿᩱ , Khün ᨿᩱ, Lao ໃຍ (nyai), ᦺᦍ (yay), Tai Dam ꪻꪥ, Tai Dón ꪻꪥ, Shan ယႂ်း (yáue), Tai Nüa ᥕᥬᥰ (yäue), Phake ယၞ် (yaü), Ahom 𑜊𑜧 (jʸaw).

The "concerned about" sense is a figurative semantic extension from the "web" sense, i.e. "to become entangled in a relational web with another" > "be concerned about".
