From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlɛːmᴬ¹ (sharp; pointed), from Proto-Tai *ʰleːmᴬ (sharp-pointed).

Cognate with Isan แหลม, Lao ແຫຼມ (mrǣ), Northern Thai ᩉᩖᩯᨾ, Khün ᩉᩖᩯᨾ, ᦶᦜᧄ (l̇aem), Tai Dam ꪵꪨꪣ, Tai Dón ꪵꪨꪣ, Shan လႅမ် (lěm), Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥛᥴ (láem), Zhuang lem or liem, Zuojiang Zhuang liem.

Compare Proto-Hlai *tçʰəːm (sharp). Compare also Proto-Austronesian *Cazəm (sharp) (whence Malay tajam, Tagalog matalim).
