From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɛːnᴮ¹ (classifier of boards, flat objects, etc.), from Middle Chinese (MC phenH). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨹᩯ᩠᩵ᨶ, Lao ແຜ່ນ (phǣn), Tai Dam ꪵꪠ꪿ꪙ, Shan ၽႅၼ်ႇ (phèn), Tai Nüa ᥚᥦᥢᥱ (phǎen), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜐𑜫 (phiñ).
