From Proto-Tai *qeːnᴬ (“arm”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩯ᩠ᨶ, Lao ແຂນ (khǣn), Lü ᦶᦃᧃ (ẋaen), Tai Dam ꪵꪄꪙ, Shan ၶႅၼ် (khěn), Phake ၵိၺ် (khiñ), Ahom *𑜁𑜢𑜐𑜫 (*khiñ), Zhuang gen. Compare Proto-Kam-Sui *k-xiːn¹ (“arm”), Middle Chinese 肩 (MC ken).
