Etymology

From เหล็ก (lèk, “iron”) + an element ใน (nai, “stinger”), the latter from Proto-Tai *lajᴬ (“stinger (of a bee)”).[1] The Thai form /najᴬ²/ is aberrant, possibly due to dissimilation from /lekᴰˢ²/, i.e. *lekᴰˢ² lajᴬ² > /lekᴰˢ² najᴬ²/.[2]

The second component, ใน (nai), is cognate with Zhuang laez (“stinger (of a bee)”).
