Etymology 1
Probably borrowed from Sanskrit मव्यति (mavyati, “to bind”).[1] The semantic shift would be along the lines of "binding" > "clinching" > "boxing". Cognate with Lao ມວຍ (muāi), Shan မူၺ်း (mói).
