Borrowed from Old Chinese (OC *baːn, “tray”). Cognate with Lao ພານ (phān), Tai Dam ꪝꪱꪙ or ꪟꪱꪙ, Burmese ဗန်း (ban:, tray), Shan ပၢၼ်ႉ (pâ̰an, tray), and possibly Khmer ពាន (piən) (Pou and Jenner, 1980-1981).
