Etymology
From Old Khmer pañjīy, pañjiy, pañjiya, pāñjiy, pañjīy, pāñjī (“archive; account; list; record; register; etc”); ultimately from Sanskrit पञ्जी (pañjī, “almanac; calendar; register”). Compare Modern Khmer បញ្ជី (bɑñcii). Cognate with Lao ບັນຊີ (ban sī).
